Entrevista David White

Han pasado muchos años desde los tiempos en que el thrash metal del área de la bahía de San Francisco en Estados Unidos, estalló como una bomba nuclear en el mundo del metal. Los grandes nombres son conocidos por todos, pero la escena nunca se limitó a tres o cuatro bandas.

Los legendarios Heathen son parte de esa vena del thrash que arrasó el planeta durante los ochentas. Su separación en 1992 después de haber sacado dos clásicos como “Breaking the Silence” y “Victims of Deception” fue una lápida que no resistió el paso del tiempo, pues en el 2001 comenzaron a trabajar juntos nuevamente.

Dieciocho años después de su último disco en estudio, Heathen asalta nuestros oídos con “Evolution of Chaos”, uno de los mejores discos de thrash metal de los últimos diez o quince años, reviviendo como nunca el sonido clásico del área de la bahía.

Si el regreso triunfal del 2009 en el thrash fue el de los canadienses Sacrifice, en el 2010 la corona se la viene a colocar Heathen, con una alineación de lujo, y metidos desde ya con toda seguridad en nuestro Top 20.

El cantante original de la banda, David White se tomó unos minutos para conversar con metalicos.com y hablar sobre la actualidad de la banda.

Amantes del thrash metal más clásico y poderoso, quedan con Heathen.

1-METALICOS-!Saludos! Soy Mauricio de www.metalicos.com en Costa Rica, ¡muchas gracias por tu tiempo David! ¿Cómo va todo?

David White/ Todo bien, gracias.

2-METALICOS-¿Cómo se sienten por la recepción de su último álbum “The Evolution of Chaos”?

David White/ ¡Pues es bastante bueno saber que existe gente allá afuera que le gusta lo que estamos haciendo!

3-METALICOS-Para aquellos fans que no estén muy familiarizados con su trabajo de los primeros días, ¿podrías introducirnos un poco en el mundo de Heathen, y de cómo eran las cosas cuando empezaron?

David White/ Fue en 1986 cuando me uní por primera vez a la banda, en aquel momento estaban Lee Altus, Doug Piercy, Carl Sacco y Eric Wong en el grupo. El área de la bahía estaba efervescente con el metal, muchas cosas estaban pasando, Metallica estaba ya bien de camino hacia grandes cosas, los clubes locales eran el Old Waldorf y Wolfgangs administrados por Bill Graham (famoso promotor norteamericano de conciertos N. del E.), el muy importante Berkeley, el Stone en San Francisco así como el Ruthies Inn en Oakland, todos los cuales juagaron un gran papel en todo lo que era la escena metal del área de la bahía.

4-METALICOS-¿Rescataron algunas viejas ideas o material antiguo para el disco nuevo, o todo es completamente nuevo?

David White/ Hay muchos riffs viejos en el disco, pero desarrollamos todo para que tuviera un look fresco, y con el cuidado de no perder lo que hace a Heathen ser Heathen.

5-METALICOS-He leído que la banda se encuentra algo ocupada con tours en varios países; ¿cómo se sienten por regresar al escenario con Heathen presentando un álbum nuevo?

David White/ Pues estamos cerca de salir con rumbo a Europa a finales de Abril y hasta Mayo, y de hecho para promover el disco nuevo ahora que ya se encuentra en la calle. ¡Es una gran sensación el poder salir finalmente y tocar canciones nuevas!

6-METALICOS-Sabemos que la mayoría de los miembros de la banda se mantuvieron activos durante todos estos años, pero comparando con los viejos tiempos, cuál es la diferencia principal para ustedes luego de haber regresado?

David White/ Bueno, todos ahora vivimos con algo de distancia entre nosotros, y estamos más viejos.

7-¿Y qué tan diferente es todo para ustedes como personas y músicos ahora?

David White/ Creo que nuestros valores han cambiado, todos tenemos familias ahora.

8-METALICOS-¿Consideras que “Evolution of Chaos” es un mejor disco que “Breaking the Silence” y “Victims of Deception”? Si es así, ¿cuál es la razón?

David White/ Si lo considero así, porque creo que hemos crecido y aprendido mucho a través de los años, ahora somos capaces de expresarnos mejor y entendemos cómo sacar lo máximo de una canción. Además pudimos pasar el tiempo necesario para asegurarnos de que todas las cosas eran lo que queríamos que fueran, dejando ninguna roca sin voltear…

9-METALICOS-¿Cómo se ven las cosas en términos de mantener a la banda activa, de tour y sacando discos? ¿Planean continuar a tiempo completo?

David White/ Pues eso lo veremos, depende realmente de los fans, justo ahora tenemos un contrato por tres álbumes, y si nos va bien, continuaremos.

10-METALICOS-¿Y qué tal venir de tour por América Latina, tienen planes al respecto?

David White/ ¡Nos encantaría visitarlos! Pero no hay nada arreglado todavía, depende de los fans el solicitarlo…

11-METALICOS-Estoy seguro que los fans antiguos están más que complacidos por tenerlos de vuelta, pero ¿puedes comentarnos cómo ha sido la reacción de los nuevos fans jóvenes?

David White/ Hasta ahora ha sido muy buena, es grandioso oir acerca de los nuevos fans, escuchar sus comentarios y ver su energía en los conciertos.

12-METALICOS-Trajeron algunos colaboradores de peso para “Evolution of Chaos” como Steve DiGiorgio y Gary Holt. ¿Puedes hablarnos sobre su aporte en el álbum?

David White/ Pues todos los que vinieron son amigos, y teníamos ideas para ciertas canciones y todos ellos trajeron lo que estábamos buscando. Eso hizo el proceso mucho más agradable para nosotros, ¡queremos lo que es mejor para la música!

13-METALICOS-Listo, creo que estamos bien por ahora David, gracias de nuevo por el tiempo que le dedicaste a www.metalicos.com, ¡puedes estar seguro que todos los maniáticos del thrash en Costa Rica y el resto de América Latina estarán más que contentos de leer tus palabras! Many years have passed since the times when the bay area thrash metal went off like a nuclear bomb in the world of metal. The great names are known to everyone, but the scene was never limited to three or four bands.

Legendary Heathen is part of this thrash metal tradition which pulverized the planet during the eighties. Their break up in 1992 after having released two classic albums like “Breaking the Silence” and “Victims of Deception”, became a tombstone that couldn’t resist the test of time, because in 2001 the band began to breathe again.

Eighteen years after their last studio album, Heathen assaults our ears with “Evolution of Chaos”, one of the best thrash metal albums of the last ten or fifteen years, reviving the classic bay area sound like you never heard it.

If thrash’s metal glorious comeback in 2009 belongs to Sacrifice, in 2010 the crown is taken by Heathen, who with a solid line up, is now for sure a member of our yearly Top 20.

Original singer David White took some minutes to answer the questions of metalicos.com and talked to us about the band’s current life.

1-METALICOS-Hello there! This is Mauricio from www.metalicos.com in Costa Rica, thanks a lot for your time! How are you?

David White/ I'm well. Thank you.

2-METALICOS-How do you feel about the reception of your latest album “The Evolution of Chaos”?

David White/ Well it's nice to know there are people out there who dig what we’re doing!

3-METALICOS-For those fans who are not familiar with your work from the first days, can you please introduce us a little bit in the world of Heathen, and how things were when you began?

David White/ It was back in 1986 when I first joined the band, at that time it was Lee Altus, Doug Piercy, Carl Sacco and Eric Wong in the band. The bay Area was thriving with Metal music, lots going on, Metallica was well on their way to great things, the local clubs were the Old Waldorf and Wolfgangs run by Bill Graham, the keystone Berkeley, the Stone in S.F as well as Ruthies Inn in Oakland, all played a huge part in all that was the Bay Area Metal scene.

4-METALICOS-Did you rescue any old ideas or material for the new album or everything is completely new?

David White/ There are many old riffs in there, but we developed everything with a fresh look, careful not to lose what makes Heathen - Heathen.

5-METALICOS-I’ve read that the band has been busy already touring some countries; how does it feel to be back on the stage with Heathen presenting a new album?

David White/ We are about to go to Europe at the end of April into May and actually promote the album now that it is released. It's a great feeling to get out and finally play new songs!!

6-METALICOS-We know that most of the band members kept active during all these years but, compared to the old days, what was the main difference for the band after returning?

David White/ Well we all live with a bit of distance between us, and we're older.

7-And how different is everything for you as persons and musicians now?

David White/ I think our values have changed, we all have families now.

8-METALICOS-Do you consider “Evolution of Chaos” to be a better album than “Breaking the Silence” and “Victims of Deception”? If so, what’s the reason?

David White/ I do, because I believe we have grown and learned so much over the years, we are able to express ourselves better and we understand how to make the most out of a song. Plus we were able to spent time to make sure everything was how we wanted it to be, leaving no stone unturned...

9-METALICOS-How do things look in terms of keeping the band active, touring and releasing albums? Do you plan to continue full time?

David White/ We shall see, it really depends on the fans, right now we have a three album deal, and if we do well, we will continue.

10-METALICOS-How about touring Latin America, do you have any plans to do so?

DAVID WHITE/ We would love to come down there! But nothing is set up yet, it's up to the fans to demand it…

11-METALICOS-I´m sure that the old fans are more than pleased for having you back, but can you tell us how the reaction has been from young new fans?

David White/ So far so good, it's great to hear from the new fans and listen to the comments, and see their energy at the shows.

12-METALICOS-You brought in some strong collaborators for “Evolution of Chaos” like Steve DiGiorgio and Gary Holt. Can you talk to us about their input on the album?

David White/ Well everyone that came in are friends, and we had ideas for certain songs and they all brought what we were looking for. It makes the process much more enjoyable for us; we want what's best for the music!
