talentoso con sus pies en el suelo, y sin una sola traza de actitud rockstar, a pesar del enorme éxito de su banda.

El pasado viernes 12 de Junio, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a Sakis para metalicos.com, y tuvimos una buena conversación siguiendo temas como su próximo álbum, su actual DVD del 20 aniversario de la banda ¡e incluso fútbol! Entre otras cosas.  ¡Disfruten!

1-METALICOS-Bueno, primer grupo de preguntás: las fáciles!... ¿Qué han estado haciendo últimamente?

SAKIS/ Bueno la verdad, hemos estado trabajando en el Nuevo álbum últimamente, y estoy encantado de que la composición del disco nuevo está casi lista,  entonces estoy listo sabes, para ir al estudio y grabarlo.  Esto es lo que Roting Christ ha estado haciendo últimamente: Componer el nuevo disco y hacer algunos festivales sabes, en algunos sitios durante el verano. 

2-METALICOS-El Nuevo DVD que acaba de salir, “NON SERVIAM, a 20 year apocryphal story” (próximamente reseñado en metalicos.com), celebra precisamente las primeras dos décadas de la banda... ¿Cómo está reaccionando la gente al DVD?

SAKIS/  De hecho están reaccionando muy positivamente y muy optimistamente, quiero decir, tú sabes que los DVDs, CDs no se venden muy bien, pero la gente está reaccionando muy positiva a este DVD, porque en mi opinión el DVD incluye toda la historia de la banda, y realmente tiene sentido para alguien el comprarlo; entonces sí, están reaccionando muy positivamente y estamos honrados, muy contentos por que la gente todavía respeta a Rotting Christ.

METALICOS-Es cierto, de hecho compré mi copia y es un enorme y masivo documento que realmente hace honor a Rotting Christ...

SAKIS/ Exactamente, lo intenté mucho con este DVD, estuve trabajando por más de un año con el fin de reunir cosas tú sabes, quería que fuera masivo, exactamente: masivo... que incluyera toda la historia de la banda. 

3-METALICOS-¿Planean hacer más tours este año, o se están concentrando únicamente en la grabación del nuevo álbum?

SAKIS/ No,  paramos los tours, le dijimos no a los grandes tours sabes, dijimos no ok, muchas gracias pero tenemos que parar un poco, tenemos que detenernos porque nos gustaría concentrarnos más en el disco nuevo y esto para nosotros es una cosa muy importante.  Ahora, para el disco nuevo, entramos al estudio dentro de dos meses y justo después de su salida, vamos a comenzar a viajar por el mundo, esperamos que algún día a Costa Rica.  Esperamos algún día encontrar nuevas tierras, porque hemos tocado en muchos países, por ejemplo este año: Perú, Ecuador, Venezuela, ¿por qué no en Costa Rica pronto?  Entonces, saldremos a la carretera de nuevo, y vamos a hacer un tour mundial justo después de salido el disco, pero ahora le estamos diciendo no a los tours y los festivales, porque me gustaría estar concentrado solamente en el disco nuevo. 

4-METALICOS-Tengo entendido que eres seguidor del fútbol también, específicamente del AEK, ¿Es eso cierto?

SAKIS/ (Risas) Eso es cierto si, si.  

5-METALICOS-¿Sabías que un par de futbolistas costarricenses jugaron para el AEK hace unos años?

SAKIS/ Si!  Recuerdo haber escuchado sobre uno jugando en el OFI (Ronald Gómez, N.d.E.), un equipo en Creta, y los dos costarricenses que jugaron aquí (Mauricio Wright y Walter Centeno, N.d.E.) pero ahora no recuerdo sus nombres...

METALICOS-Bueno, fue algo que pasó hace 4 o 5 años, pero fue un gran asunto aquí en Costa Rica tener un par de jugadores incluso participando en la Liga de Campeones, ya sabes, todo el gran alboroto de jugar fútbol en Europa.

SAKIS/ Si, es algo bueno, es algo bueno. 

6-METALICOS-Ok, Segundo grupo de preguntás: Me gustaría hablar sobre Sakis el metalero, no solamente el creador o el artista.  Sé que hay mucha gente curiosa por saber esto: ¿Escuchas tus propios discos?  Pero, me refiero a escucharlos como cualquier metalero: por puro placer.  ¿Qué sientes cuándo escuchas tu propia música?

SAKIS/ ¿Qué siento...?

METALICOS/ Si.

SAKIS/ Para ser honesto, no escucho mucho mis propios álbumes,  ¿Sabes por qué?  Porque cuando termino un disco lo he escuchado más de mil veces, entonces cuando el disco está afuera digo: “listo, es hora de que la gente lo disfrute”, entonces me siento desde luego muy orgulloso de tener la posibilidad de crear álbumes, es muy bueno para mí sabes, mientras pueda mantenerme creando, eso significa que todavía estoy activo en mi vida, si un día me despierto y me doy cuenta que no puedo componer algo, que no puedo crear algo, estoy seguro que voy a caer en depresión, entonces justo ahora, estoy muy orgulloso de haber terminado el disco nuevo, y estoy muy ansioso de entrar al estudio con el fin de grabarlo, es algo muy importante para mí. 

7-METALICOS-¿Puedes decirnos cuál es el mejor concierto al que has asistido?

SAKIS/ Mejor concierto al que he asistido…

METALICOS-Correcto.

SAKIS/ La semana pasada vi a AC/DC en Atenas (qué suerte! N.d.E.) y realmente lo disfruté.  También sabes, me gustó mucho, en 1988 recuerdo a Pink Floyd, me encantó mucho el show.  Desde luego disfruto cada show underground porque sabes, voy a muchos shows underground aquí en Atenas, sigo a los nuevos grupos en la escena.  Pero también me gustan los grandes festivales en Europa, me gusta mucho por ejemplo estar en el festival de Wacken, es grandioso.  Los festivales son una de las mejores cosas en mi vida, entonces, hablando de shows, los grandes festivales en Europa son los mejores a los que me gusta ir.

8-METALICOS-Ahora que estamos hablando de este tema… ¿Alguna banda que quisieras ver en vivo antes de morir?

SAKIS/ Tenía mucha curiosidad de ver a Ozzy Osbourne, y lo vi el año pasado.  Estaba con curiosidad de ver a AC/DC y los vi la semana pasada, tenía curiosidad por ver a Bathory –es mi banda favorita–, pero eso no va suceder nunca porque Bathory ya no existe... Quorthon murió.  Realmente quiero ver algún día a Darkthrone tocando en vivo.. hmm, estos son algunos de los nombres que vienen a mi mente ahora.

9-METALICOS-Ok, tercera parte, hablemos de la banda: ¿Planeas seguir produciendo los dicos de Rotting Christ?

SAKIS/ Si, si, voy a producir el próximo álbum también, soy un fan de este asunto de la vieja escuela: hazlo tú mismo, entonces cuando estoy haciendo algo prefiero hacerlo yo para que alguien que escuche mi música pueda ver que es Rotting Christ 100% y no ya sabes, grandes productores, grandes estudios y cosas así.  Prefiero que sea mi alma la que hable en lugar de alguien más,  pongo mi alma en mi música y trato de sonar lleno de espíritu, ese es mi objetivo. 

10-METALICOS-Hablando producción, ¿Qué es exactamente lo que no te gustó en términos de producción, del disco Khronos?

SAKIS/  La forma en que fue grabado.  Lo grabamos muy mal, quiero decir, en ese periodo de tiempo no tenía a mi baterista con la banda –y mi hermano es el baterista– entonces él no pudo tocar la batería, y tuvimos que grabar con alguien más (Jan Roger Halvorsen: Forgery, Old Man’s Child N.d.E.) que no puso mucha atención en la grabación, yo era la única persona, lo grabé todo yo mismo.  El grupo estaba muy enfermo, estaba muy bajo en ese momento, dos miembros estaban realmente enfermos, fue un gran problema, así que no pudieron grabar, lo manejé todo yo mismo, o sea, grabé el bajo, las guitarras, hice las voces, los teclados y no pude dar el 100%, esta es la razón por la cual no me gustó mucho el Khronos en términos de producción.  Pero el estudio (Abyss studio N.d.E.) crea una atmósfera, no sé por qué... es porque, sabes, el lugar donde grabamos está en Escandinavia –en Suecia–,  es realmente tétrico,  un lugar que realmente te influencia, está cerca de una lago congelado en el bosque, entonces la atmósfera que crea es muy extraña. 

11-METALICOS-Tu hermano es el otro miembro original de la banda, así que han sido 20 años juntos.  ¿Cómo su relación  influencia la integridad de Rotting Christ?

SAKIS/ En verdad son 25 como hermanos, no sé si tienes hermanos, ¡pero los hermanos siempre pelean!  Pero por otro lado él es la única persona en quien puedo confiar en la banda, mi hermano es muy estricto, nos seguimos el uno al otro así que esa es la razón por la que sigo con Rotting Christ, aunque él no sea responsable de la composición de las canciones, se preocupa mucho especialmente en el lado psicológico de toda la situación, aunque algunas veces, repito, tenemos muchas peleas.

Es normal sabés, somos hermanos, hermanos, pero nos queremos el uno al otro y eso es lo más importante.  

12-METALICOS-¿Puedes decirnos qué es Rotting Christ para ti, a un nivel personal?

SAKIS/  Es la parte más oscura de mi alma, de eso se trata.  Es una expresión.  Creo que sin Rotting Christ tendría muchos problemas psicológicos.   Cuando tengo la tensión por crear algo, soy muy afortunado de poder sacarlo a través de un álbum, así que Rotting Christ es algo así como mi psicólogo.

METALICOS-Si, leí una entrevista donde dijiste que la música es el mejor tipo de terapia, y no podría estar más de acuerdo, demasiado cierto... 

13-METALICOS-Ok, nos vamos acercando al final; este es el último grupo de preguntas, algo así como temas generales de los que nos gustaría saber un poco más.  ¿Admiras a algún escritor griego antiguo o moderno?

SAKIS/ La verdad no admiro mucho a los nuevos griegos.  Admiro más a los antiguos, y no solo a los escritores, también me gusta el espíritu.  Hoy en día desafortunadamente los nuevos griegos no tienen nada que ver con su pasado y eso me pone realmente triste, porque no respetan nuestro pasado, entonces, si estamos hablando de escritores, me gusto más los antiguos. 

14-METALICOS-¿Por qué crees que es el heavy metal, y el black especialmente, el tipo arte que está más dedicado a cuestionar y mofarse de la religión y todas las ideas alrededor del concepto común de dios?

SAKIS/ Porque dios es filosofía, dios es algo que no… como decirlo, dame un minuto… dios es algo que sabés, se te va volando, la música es algo que toda la gente ve.  El metal está siempre ansioso, el metal en mi opinión trata de invitar a explorar cosas nuevas, así que esa es la razón por la que siempre estamos hablando de religión y cosas así.  

15-METALICOS-En una de las fotos incluidas en tu DVD, apareces frente a la estrella de Jimi Hendrix en el paseo de la fama en Hollywood... eso me hizo preguntarme acerca de tu opinión sobre la influencia del rock clásico en el desarrollo del heavy metal moderno.  ¿Qué piensas?

SAKIS/ Es el primer paso la verdad, sabes, el primer paso del heavy metal, creo que la música rock de vieja escuela influenció a las bandas de hard rock, las cuales influenciaron a su vez al heavy metal, y este al thrash y luego el black metal, etc.  Ese fue el primer paso de la música heavy metal y por supuesto, escuchar a guitarristas como Jimi Hendrix o estas viejas cosas, ha influenciado mucho a los guitarristas del heavy metal, y personalmente a mí!  Cuando vi a AC/DC la semana pasada, observé a 4 tipos que no tocan tan bien que digamos, pero que dan su alma en su música, y esa es una muy buena lección para los que vienen surgiendo, para la gente nueva que está demasiado metida con internet, que escucha música solamente en mp3, pero la música es algo humano ¿ok?  Viene de humanos y es para humanos, así que esa es la razón por la que respeto a guitarristas como Jimi Hendrix y a todas las bandas de rock de la vieja escuela. 

16-METALICOS-Haz viajado por todo el mundo tocando durante las últimas dos décadas.  ¿Qué has aprendido de haber visto al mundo y su gente?  ¿En qué clase de persona te has convertido?

SAKIS/ Hmm, me he convertido en una persona anti racista.  He visto a mucha gente, y si son blancos o negros, tienen los mismos problemas, ¡pero el metal une a la gente! Y los chicos metaleros en todo el mundo se ven más o menos igual,  así que me he convertido en... (Hace una pausa)  He tenido muchos problemas en mi vida, y creo que me he convertido en una especie de... ¡no soy racista o algo así!  Por eso me pone nervioso cuando veo, ya sabes, bandas racistas especialmente en el black metal, ¡estamos en contra de eso!  Estamos realmente metidos en la música, porque la música une a la gente, y porque es algo que ha salido de los muchos problemas que he tenido en mi carrera. 

17-METALICOS-¿Qué piensas de andar de gira por América Latina?  Cuando las bandas europeas nos visitan, muchos de ellos se sorprenden de nuestra pasión.  ¡Tenemos reputación de ser locos!

SAKIS/  ¡Exactamente!  Ustedes mantienen la llama ardiendo, mantienen el espíritu con vida, esa es la razón por la que todos los músicos del metal van a tocar a América Latina.  América Latina es el último campo de batalla en este mundo.  Ustedes todavía mantienen el alma viva, su forma de vivir es en verdad humanista, y por eso –personalmente Rotting Christ– y tal vez todas las otras bandas, es que aman tocar ahí, porque realmente se comunican con la gente, con sus fans ahí, así que por favor sigan haciéndolo, mantengan la pasión, continúen siendo seres humanos ok!?  Es algo muy importante, porque todos los demás han perdido sus almas, y piensan en andar por el dinero, y en ser famosos o creen que son dioses y cosas así.  Esta es la razón por la que adoro tocar ahí y por supuesto ¡espero que un día sea en Costa Rica! 

18-METALICOS-¿Qué quieres en el futuro para la banda?

SAKIS/  Tener nuestra salud, para seguir creando música,  seguir siendo un dolor en el trasero de las ideas conservadoras, y cuando hablo de ideas conservadoras, me refiero a la religión, así que nos gustaría ser ese dolor en el trasero, nos gustaría continuar pensando aunque fuera algo muy pequeño con toda la banda, así que, quiero tener mi salud en buena condición, para mantenerme creando con la banda y haciendo... ¡mi sueño la verdad es morir en el escenario!  Espero que esto se cumpla algún día.

METALICOS-Bueno, aunque morir no es lo más feliz, hacerlo en el escenario es la forma perfecta para un músico ¡es realmente honesto!

SAKIS/ ¿Sabes algo?  He tratado muchas veces de cambiar mi vida ¿ok?  Porque pensar en las cosas más fáciles sería como “Rotting Christ es lo que tienes, y somos como rock Stara”, pero las cosas no son así.  Las cosas son como... tener otros pensamientos, como finalizar nuestras vidas aquí en Gracia, pero tenemos tantos problemas grandes, con el seguro social, con la vida pública... muchos problemas ¿Sabes?  Debes ser, debes sentirte como un luchador, como un luchador en una batalla, ¡como un soldado!  Me considero a mí mismo como un soldado del metal ¿ok?  No sé por qué estoy haciendo esto, ¡no lo sé!  Tal vez esa es la razón por la que vine a este planeta, solo para tocar música y morir en el escenario sabes, ese es mi objetivo...  tienes que creer y sentir lo que estás haciendo, esa es la forma que vas a conseguir tus sueños.

19-METALICOS-Ok Sakis, muchas gracias por tomar el tiempo de hablar con tus fans en Costa Rica y en América Latina en general, ni falta que hace decirlo, estás invitado a visitar este país cuando quieras, con la banda o por ti mismo, ¡nuestras puertas están abiertas!  Y ahora la clásica última pregunta: por favor dale un mensaje final a los lectores de metalicos.com.

Being the most acclaimed and worldwide known metal band to ever come from the land of mighty Zeus and poet Homer, Rotting Christ has left a deep mark in the ears and souls of countless fans during three different decades now.   From the now cult classic “Satanas Tedeum” times in the late eighties to their most recent opus “Theogonia” in 2007, the band has established themselves as one the most consistent, honest and dark acts not only in the black metal realm, but in the metal world in general. 

One of the key factors that have garnered the band the respect they have, is the great spirit of founding member, leader and main songwriter Sakis Tolis, an incredibly talented creator with his feet on the ground, and without a single trace of rock star attitude, despite the huge success of his band.

Last Friday June 12th, I had the opportunity to interview Sakis for metalicos.com, and we had a nice conversation following topics such as their upcoming album, their current 20th anniversary DVD,  and even football! Among many others.   Enjoy! 

1-METALICOS-Well, first set of questions: the easy ones… what have you been doing lately?

SAKIS/ Well actually, we have been working on the new album lately, and I’m very glad that the composition of the new album is almost over, so I’m ready you know, to go to the studio to record it.  This is what Rotting Christ has been doing lately: Recording the new album and doing some festivals you know, in some places during summer. 

2-METALICOS-Your new DVD which just came out, “NON SERVIAM, a 20 year apocryphal story” (soon to be reviewed on metalicos.com), celebrates precisely the first two decades of the band… How are the people reacting to it?

SAKIS/ Actually they are reacting very positive and very optimistic, I mean, you know DVDs, CDs don’t sell that well, but they are reacting very positive to this DVD because in my opinion the DVD includes all the history of the band, and it really makes sense for someone to buy it, so they are reacting very positive, and we are very honored, very glad that the people still respect Rotting Chirst.

METALICOS-That’s true, in fact I bought my own copy and it is a huge and massive document that really honors Rotting Christ…

SAKIS/ Exactly, I tried very much for this DVD, I was working for more than a year in order to collect things, you know, I wanted it to be massive, exactly: massive… to include all the history of the band. 

3-METALICOS-Are you planning to tour some more this year, or are you just concentrating on the recording of the new album?

SAKIS/ No, we quit the tours, we said no to big tours you know, we said no ok, thank you very much but we have to quit a little bit, we have to sand by because you know, we would like to concentrate more on the new album and for us this is a very important thing.  Now, for the new album we enter the studio in two months from now and right after its release, we will start touring the world, hope some day to go to Costa Rica.  We hope some day to find new lands, because we have played so many countries for instance this year: Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, why not to Costa Rica soon?  So, we’ll hit the road again, and we are going to tour worldwide right after the album is released, but right now we are saying no to tours and festivals, because I would like to be concentrated only on the new album. 

4-METALICOS-I understand that you are football fan also, specifically of AEK, is that true?

SAKIS/ (Laughs) That is true yeah yeah,  

5-METALICOS-Did you know that a couple of Costarican football players played for AEK some years ago? 

SAKIS/ Yes! I recall hearing one who was playing in OFI (Ronald Gómez N.d.E.), a football team in Creta, and the two costaricans who played here (Mauricio Wright and Walter Centeno N.d.E.), but right now I don’t remember their names…

METALICOS-Oh well, it happened 4 or 5 years ago, but it was a huge thing in Costa Rica to have a couple players, even participating in the Champions League you know, all the big deal of football in Europe..

SAKIS/ Yeah, that’s good, that’s good. 

6-METALICOS-Ok, second set of questions:  I would like to talk about Sakis the metalhead, not only the creator or the artist. I know a lot of people are curious about this: Do you listen to your own albums? And I mean, listening just like any metalhead: for the pleasure of it.  What do you feel when listening to your own music? 

SAKIS/ What do I feel...?

METALICOS/ Yep.

SAKIS/ To be honest, I don’t listen that much to my albums, you know why? Because when I finish an album, I have listened to it more that one thousand times, so when the album is out I say “alright, time for the people to enjoy it”, so I feel of course very proud that I am able to create albums, it’s very god for me you know, for as long as I keep creating, that means that I’m still active in my life, if some day I wake up and realize that I cannot compose something, that I cannot create something, I’m sure that I will fall in depression, so right now I’m very proud that I have finished the new album, and I’m looking forward to enter the studio in order to record it, that’s a very important thing for me. 

7-METALICOS-Can you tell us what’s the best concert that you have ever attended?

SAKIS/ Best concert I attended…

METALICOS-Yes.

SAKIS/ Last week I saw AC/DC in Athens (lucky! N.d.E.) and I really enjoyed this.  Also you know, I like very much, in 1988 I remember Pink Floyd, I like very much the show.  Of course you know I enjoy every underground show because you know, I go to many underground shows here in Athens, I follow the newcomers in the scene.  But I also like big festivals here in Europe, I very much enjoy being for instance in Wacken Festival, it´s great.  Festivals are one the best things in my life so, when talking about shows, the big festivals here in Europe, those are the best things I like to attend. 

8-METALICOS-Now that we are talking about this subject… Any band that you would like to see live before you die?

SAKIS/ I was very curious to see Ozzy Osbourne, and I did, last year.  I was very curious to see AC/DC, and I saw them one week ago, I was really curious to see Bathory –that’s my favorite band–, but that will never happen because Bathory doesn´t exist anymore… Quorthon died.  I really want to see someday Darkthrone playing live.. hmm, these are some of the names that come right now in my mind. 

9-METALICOS-Ok, third part, let’s talk about the band:  Are you planning to keep producing the albums of Rotting Christ?

SAKIS/ Yes, yes, I’m going to produce the upcoming album too, I’m a fan of the oldschoolish metal thing: do it yourself, so when I’m doing something I prefer to do it by myself so someone who listens to my music can see it´s 100% Rotting Christ and not you know, big producers, big studios and stuff like that.  I prefer my soul to talk instead of someone, so I put my soul in my music and I try to sound soulful, that´s my goal.   

10-METALICOS-Talking about production, what is it exactly that you didn’t like about the Khronos album in terms of production?

SAKIS/ The way it was recorded.  We recorded it very bad, I mean, on that time period I didn’t have my drummer in the band –and my brother is the drummer– so he didn’t play the drums, and we had to record with someone else (Jan Roger Halvorsen: Forgery, Old Man’s Child N.d.E.) that didn’t pay so much attention on the recording, I was the only person, I recorded everything by myself.  The band was really sick, it was really down at this time period, two members were really sick, it was a big problem, so they couldn’t follow the recording, I managed everything by myself, I mean, I recorded the bass, the guitars, I did the vocals, the keyboards, so I didn’t manage to do 100%, this is the reason why I didn’t like so much Khronos in terms of production.  But the studio (Abyss studio N.d.E.) creates an atmosphere, I don’t know why… that’s because, you know, the place where we recorded is in Scandinavia –in Sweden–,  it’s really gloomy, it’s a really influential place, it’s close to a frozen lake into the woods, so the atmosphere that creates is really weird. 

11-METALICOS-Your brother is the other original member of the band, so it’s been 20 years together.  How does your relationship influence the integrity of Rotting Christ?

SAKIS/ Actually 25 as brothers, I don’t know if you have any brothers, but brothers always fight!  But on the other hand he is the only person that I can trust in the band, my brother he’s very strict, we follow each other so, this is the reason I keep on going with Rotting Christ, even if he is not responsible for the composition of the songs, he cares very much especially on the psychological part of the whole situation so, even if sometimes, I repeat, we have many fights.

It’s usual you know we are brothers, brothers, but we love each other and that’s the main thing.  

12-METALICOS-Can you tell us what is Rotting Christ for you, on a personal level?

SAKIS/ It’s the darkest part of my soul, that’s what it’s all about.  It’s an expression.  I think that without Rotting Christ I would have many psychological problems.  When I have the tension to create something, I’m very lucky that I am able to release it on an album, so Rotting Christ is something like my psychologist. 

METALICOS-Yes, I read on an interview that you said that music was the best kind of therapy, and I couldn’t agree more, so true… 

13-METALICOS-Ok, we are approaching the end; this is the final set of questions, something like general subjects we would like to know a little bit more about.  Do you admire any ancient or modern Greek writers?

SAKIS/ Actually I don’t admire that much the new Greeks, I admire more the old ancient Greeks, not only writers, I also like very much the spirit.  Now a days unfortunately, new Greeks have nothing to do with their past, and that makes me really sad because they don’t respect our past, so if we are talking about writers, I like very much more the old ones. 

14-METALICOS-Why do you think that is heavy metal, and black metal especially, the kind of art that is most dedicated to questioning and mocking religion and all the ideas around the common concept of god?

SAKIS/ Because god is philosophy, god is something that cannot… how I say, wait a minute… god is something you know, that flies away, music is something that all the people see.  Metal music is always anxious, metal music in my opinion tries to invite to explore new things so, this is the reason why we’re always talking about religion and stuff like that.  

15-METALICOS-On one of the pictures included on your DVD, you appear in front of the Jimi Hendrix star in the Hollywood walk of fame… that made me wonder about your opinion on the influence of classic rock in the development of modern heavy metal.  What do you think?

SAKIS/ It’s the first step actually you know, the first step of heavy metal, I think the old schoolish rock music influenced hard rock bands,  which influenced heavy metal, and heavy metal thrash,  and then black metal, etc.  That was the first step of heavy metal music and of course listening to guitar players like Jimi Hendrix or this old stuff have influenced very much heavy metal players, and personally me! When I saw AC/DC last week, I saw 4 people that didn’t play that well, but, they gave their soul to their music, so it’s a very good lesson to the newcomers, to the new people that are involved too much with internet, they listen music only from mp3, but music is something human ok? It comes from humans for humans, so this is the reason why I respect guitar players like Jimi Hendrix and all these old schoolish rock bands. 

16-METALICOS-You have toured the world extensively during the last two decades.  What have you learned from actually seeing the world and its people?  What kind of person have you become?

SAKIS/ Hmm, I have become a very anti racist person.  I have seen that people, if they are black or white, they have the same problems, but metal music unites people, and metalhead kids all around the world look like more or less the same, so I have become…(pauses)  I had troubles too much in my life, and I think I have become a kind of.. I’m a not a racist, or stuff like that! So I’m very nervous when I see, you know, racist bands especially from black metal, we are against that!  We are really into music, because music unites people, and it’s something that came from the too many troubles in my career. 

17-METALICOS-What are your thoughts on touring Latin America? When European bands visit us most of them are surprised of our passion.  We have this reputation of crazy fans!

SAKIS/ Exactly! You keep the flame burning, you keep the spirit alive, this is the reason why all metal musicians go to play in Latin America.  Latin America is the last battle field of this world.  You still keep the soul alive, your way of living is really humanistic, and this is why –personally Rotting Christ– and maybe all the other bands love to play there, because they get really in touch with the people, with their fans over there so, please keep on doing that, keep this passion, keep being human beings ok!? That’s a very important thing, because all the others have lost their souls, and think about going for money, and to be famous or think that they are gods and stuff like that.  That’s the reason why I like very much Latin America, because there is this feeling, there is communication between the people.  That’s why I love to play there and of course hopefully one in Costa Rica! 

18-METALICOS-What do you want in the future for the band?

SAKIS/ To have our health, to keep on creating music, keep on being a pain in the ass for the conservative ideas, and when I’m talking conservative ideas, I’m talking about religions and stuff, so we would like to be a pain in the ass, we would like to keep thinking even something very little with all my band, so, I want to have my health in good condition, so I keep on creating with my band and doing... my dream actually is to die on the stage! Hope some day this will be fulfilled.

METALICOS-Well, even if dying is not a happy thing, dying on the stage is the perfect way for a musician, it’s really honest!

SAKIS/ Do you know something? I have tried too many times to change my life ok?  Because thinking about some of the easiest things, would be like “Rotting Christ is what you have, and you are like rock stars”, but things are not like this.  Thing are like… have some other thoughts, like to end our living here in Greece, but we have so many big problems with the social security, social life… too many problems you know?  You must be, you must feel like a fighter, like a fighter in the battle, like a soldier! I consider myself as a soldier of metal ok?  I don’t know why I am doing this, I don’t know! Maybe that’s the reason why came into this planet, just to play music and to die on the stage you know, this is my goal… you have to believe and feel what you are doing, that way you are going to achieve your dreams.
