Devian from Sweden is a name not entirely familiar to many metalheads yet, but it is just a matter of time until they begin to make some more noise and attract additional attention.
The band has released two albums with Century Media so far, and was put together by former Marduk vocalist and drummer (Legion and Emil Dragutinovic respectively), and it gets completed by Carl Stjärnlöv on bass and Jonas “Joinus” Mattson and Tomas Nilsson on guitars.
It was precisely Tomas who took the time to answer the questions that metalicos.com prepared, and there’s nothing left on our side other than saying that a cheerful guy genuinely in love with his music, is always guarantee of a good interview! With the energy still pumping due to the recent release of their God to Illfated album (already reviewed here on metalicos.com), Tomas gave us his words. Time for some headbanging!
1-METALICOS-Hello Tomas! Thank you sooo much for taking some time to get in touch with the Costarican, and Latin American readers in general, this is a GREAT honor for metalicos.com. Ok, first of all, let’s get to know Tomas Nilsson a little a bit better, a brief profile is available at the Devian website but, what else can you tell us about yourself?
TOMAS/ Hello Costa Rica and Latin America! Tomas from Devian here… Well what can I say about myself then? I’m a 26 year old man from Sweden that loves playing guitar, work out – I’m visiting the gym 5 times a week, hang out with friends and have a huge interest for movies, specially horror movies and composing in general.
2-METALICOS-Could you give us some news about what is currently going on the Devian horde?
TOMAS/ Right now we are composing and rehearsing for the third Devian album that’s gonna continue the slaughter that Ninewinged Serpent and God to the Illfated began. I’m so thrilled about getting this baby out. This weekend we gonna start arranging some vocals for the first songs!
3-METALICOS-You are still a young band but there’s no doubt that you are climbing up really fast, a proof of that is that you are already known even here In Costa Rica, and in many other dark corners of the world. How do you feel about being suddenly recognized worldwide? Did you expect such a positive response?
TOMAS/ Haha that’s fucking excellent that people know about Devian in Costa Rica, you guys have our deepest respect for that! Well when I first joined Devian I knew that we had something going on that would get people attention and after doing some gigs together we started to become a real intensive live act. We also have a dedicated fan base and a killer street team called Kult of the Serpent lead by our trusted and devoted leader called – Head of the Serpent. They are really doing a great job for us and if you are interested in checking them out, then please do that at this location - http://www.myspace.com/kultoftheserpent
4-METALICOS-As far as I know, the first album was mainly written by Legion and Emil, but later on, when a stable line up solidified, everyone began to get involved in the songwritting process, do you think God to the Illfated reflects better the creative presence of all the band members?
TOMAS/ Yes definitely. Joinus (Jonas "Joinus" Mattson, guitars) was also involved in making Ninewinged, versus I was more dealing with arrangement since I joined the band just a few days before the actual recording. God to the Illfated was mainly written by Emil, me and Joinus and reflects a better sight of what the future will hold for Devian. On Illfated we started to experiment some with Joinus vocals as well and will continue that on the next album!
5-METALICOS-I reviewed your last album and words like hard, speed, dirty and technical were revolving in my head from the first minute I listened to it, all bonded by one additional word: creativity. How you managed to put out such a refreshing sound? It’s no secret we are saturated by bands repeating themselves or repeating things already done…
TOMAS/ I actually think that our “secret” recipe is that we all come from different musical backgrounds. Then when we combine our riffs together we are getting something quite unique and that’s the Devian sound. We are also always looking to the next horizon and the end game is to evolve with every new record.
6-METALICOS-We have seen the video for Assailant and let me tell you: it kicks ass; some nice violence in there, hehe! Who decided about the video concept, and how was the experience of shooting it?
TOMAS/ Haha thanks, yeah I think the result became very cool in the end. Carl and I actually wanted to become real action heroes after the recording session, haha just joking! Carl and the director Rasmus (Rasmus Tirzitis N.d.E.) did most of the pre-work for the video; they were the master mind of it. The concept is quite simple. Legion has been kidnapped by a harbinger of this evil priest. He’s getting really bad beaten up and after that he calls in the big guns, the rest of the Devian guys. We’re aiming to do a real shoot down with the priest and the rest of his harbingers.
Before the shoot out the insane priest calls for help and aid from God that apparently has forsaken him. Just when he is about to pull the trigger and finish Legion up he’s getting a vision that Legion is Jesus Christ… when he’s stunned Emil pulls the trigger and then Legion finishes him off with a nice decapitation… haha… and like Legion said to his daughter when she first saw the video – “And then the good guys are off to drink some coffee when they have killed the bad guys!”
7-METALICOS-Let’s talk about guitars now! How you began in this? What are your influences, favorite bands and why?
TOMAS/ I started to play guitar as a composer, I actually started out as a singer in the beginning. Since no one else where up for the task of writing song I started to learn to play a couple of chords, my father taught me in the beginning. The biggest influence at that time was Axl Rose of Guns ‘n’ Roses and I really wanted to be a front man. After a while I got more into guitar playing and realized that my singing was rather bad. I started to learn how to play guitar solos and when I watched a Swedish Television program that had Yngwie Malmsteen as a guest I was totally blown away by his skills and his looks and everything. A few days later I friend of mine showed me his album Magnus Opus and when I heard the first tunes from the first track, Vengeance, I fell in love with his style of playing. After that I spent the around 4-8 hours a day with my guitar for 3-4 years.
My main influences when it comes to solos and that stuff are Yngwie Malmsteen and Marty Friedman. I really love Marty’s way of thinking and building up harmonies and stuff. Favorite bands is depending on what mood I have at the time, even though Guns n’ Roses, Yngwie Malmsteen and Blind Guardian will always have a special place in my heart since these bands have taught me so much about music.
8-METALICOS-What do you think about having an experimented –and really enthusiastic– vocalist like Legion in the band?
TOMAS/ Well I really like Legion and consider him one of my best friends. He’s a real down to earth guy and a really funny guy to hang around with. Once he’s opening his mouth you almost have to hit him in the head to make him stop talking hahaha!
9-METALICOS-God to Illfated was produced by Peter Tägtren. What can you tell us about working with such a big name in the scene?
TOMAS/ Ever since I started to play extreme metal I had three dreams. One, record an album in Studio Friedman, do a European tour and record an album with Peter Tägtgren. With Devian I have achieved that now so now I’m heading for new dreams haha! Peter is really the man. VERY easy to work with and he’s a wizard when it comes to record and coaching Legion. I don’t think anyone else can coach Legion that good. It was pure magic sitting next to him when we recorded the vocals in Abyss. If you haven’t heard a track from God to the Illfated then listen to Assailant on our myspace and hear for yourself, Legion has NEVER sounded this good!
10-METALICOS-I think you said in another interview that this is the first time you are in a band where all the members are committed 100% with it, how do you feel about that?
TOMAS/ That’s a fucking relief hahaha! Finally no one is whining about rehearsals and stuff like that. We are here to stay and Devian WILL prevail!
11-METALICOS-How about playing in Latin America, any plans on coming over here? By the way, have you heard about the audiences?
TOMAS/ Our booking agency were talking with a promoter from Latin America/South America earlier this year, guess something happened ‘cause we never did the shows. We’re still eager to come there and play. I mean, I was watching the new Iron Maiden documentary, Flight 666, yesterday and when they showed some from the show in Costa Rica one guy said that he had quite his job to be able to at the show cause it was the biggest Metal Event ever in the country. Hahaha, DAMN! You can’t get more dedicated than that and I love that type of thinking! That’s what making metal unique I think.
12-METALICOS-What do you like the most about life on the road?
TOMAS/ It’s like an imaginary world. One day you are walking the streets of Paris and meeting all your friends you have there and the next you are in Belgium and catching up with people there. I really like that type of living, fall asleep in one country and then wake up in another. Remember one episode from the Winterfest tour we did with Deicide, Samael and Vader. I got so fucking wasted after a show in Germany… after some incidents, like falling a sleep on the backstage toilet, breaking a few bottles and drinking whiskey with various people, I some how fell asleep on the bus with my clothes on. When I woke up the next day I thought that I just had fell asleep for a few hours so I started to pack up my things to go back to the party, when I’m opening the buss door I realize that it’s morning and that we are in Switzerland… hahaha that’s what I like!
13-METALICOS-Are you focused on only touring at the moment, or do you take some time to write and rehearse any new material?
TOMAS/ On the XXV Anniversary tour Emil brought his lap top and we composed and arranged some songs during the tour. Like Assailant for an example. I started writing that song in Sweden, then we worked on it in France and in Austria too… that’s pretty cool I think! I try to pick up some new cool guitar tricks from other guitar players on the road and I try to exercise some guitar too.
14-METALICOS-Could you play the reviewer role and give us a short playlist of the albums you have been listening to lately, and the reason why you like them?
TOMAS/
Marty Friedman – Loudspeakers
Another kick ass solo album from Marty. He once again proves that you don’t have to have vocals on an album to keep it interesting. It’s an album made for loudspeakers!
Killswitch Engage – The End of Heartache
Really like this band and consider The End of Heartache their best album so far in their career. Like the way the combine groove and melodic stuff!
Dismember – Massive Killing capacity
Actually my favorite album with Dismember is Death Metal. Lately I’ve been in a mood for hearing what I consider their most heavy metal influenced record, Massive Killing Capacity.
Lady Vengeance soundtrack – movie score
I’m a real sucker for soundtracks… I love this movie from South Korea, called Lady Vengeance and the music is simply… DIVINE!!! Check it out if you haven’t heard it… really beautiful music, inspired by Baroque music.
15-METALICOS-The band displays a unique blend of death, thrash, black and heavy metal in its repertoire (influences from pretty much the entire world of metal indeed!!). Where do you think this path leads? Will Devian be the place for any “experimentation” moments, or do you prefer to keep it straight and violent?
TOMAS/ I guess we’ll explore more heavy metal influences in the future, at least I hope so. Devian is about groove and I guess violent elements will always be there in a way. We like seeing circle piths and mosh pits too much for stop playing that haha!
16-METALICOS-What goals do you want to reach as a band, and on your case, as an individual now that the people has recognized you as a new point of reference in the metal world?
TOMAS/ I wanna be able to make a living with music, to be able to have this wonderful thing as a job. That would make me really happy. I don’t really feel an urge to be recognized or famous. I wanna be able to do what I love.
17-METALICOS-Well Tomas, I once again want to take the opportunity to thank you deeply for the time you dedicated to us, I wish you and the band the best of luck and hope we are able to see you live in the future. If there’s anything else you would like to say, feel free! Horns up brother!
TOMAS/ Thanks for the interview, it was really fun doing! Well I hope we are coming to Latin/South America in the future and drink beer and party with you guys! Stay heavy!!!!!!!! |
